Five Bellingham Bells Named to 2017 West Coast League All-Star Team
Five players have been named All-Stars for their accomplishments during the 2017 season, and will represent the Bellingham Bells in the 2017 West Coast League All-Star Game, the league announced today. This year’s All-Star Game will be hosted by the Yakima Valley Pippins in Yakima, Washington on July 18th, 2017.
Chase Illig (Catcher), Austin Shenton (First Base), Ernie Yake (Shortstop), Holden Powell (Pitcher), and Zach Pettway (Pitcher) will take the field for the North Division during this year’s game and proudly represent the Bellingham area.
"We are thrilled to have five players selected to the All-Star team," Bells general manager Stephanie Morrell said. "They are all very deserving of this honor and we know they will represent our team and our city very well."
The 2017 All-Stars from the Bellingham Bells include:
Chase Illig – Catcher, West Virginia University
Chase has been the team’s starting catcher and a strong at bat for Bellingham this season. He has averaged .306 at the plate and knocked four home runs over the fence during the 2017 campaign. Illig also spends time at the Designated Hitter position because of his consistent ability to have big at bats.
Austin Shenton – First Base, Florida International University
The hometown kid, Austin Shenton, has had a breakout year this summer for Bellingham. He has consistently shown off his skills at the plate and in the infield, and is currently the league’s batting leader with an average of .409. Shenton leads the Bells in RBIs on the season with 24.
Ernie Yake – Shortstop, Gonzaga University
Yake is another Bellingham native that has been proven to be an exceptional defensive presence in the infield for Bellingham. He has also found a hot bat for the Bells and has been consistent at the leadoff spot in the batting order. Yake is averaging .357 on the 2017 season, with 15 RBIs and one home run.
Holden Powell – Pitcher, UCLA
A recent high school graduate, Powell will attend UCLA in the fall and has proven to be one of the Bells’ most consistent pitchers this season. His maturity on the mound has been proven time and time again throughout the season. He leads the team in wins (4) and strikeouts (27) with an ERA of 2.73.
Zach Pettway – Pitcher, UCLA
Pettway is another 18-year-old pitcher who is lighting up batters for the Bells. He is 1-0 on the season with 19 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched. He is also sporting a 1.90 ERA on the 2017 season.
