Bells fall to Wenatchee

07/23/2016 8:45 PM

The Bells lost to the Wenatchee AppleSox by a score of 6-1 on Saturday night.

Wenatchee got the scoring started in the 2nd. Back to back walks got thing inning started for the AppleSox and after a fielder’s choice and a strikeout a single to center from Ryan Kreidler allowed Jordan Rathbone to score, giving the AppleSox the early 1-0 lead. Wenatchee also score in the third inning. Sheldon Liikala led things off with a single and was immediately driven in by Michael Toglia’s RBI double down the left field line, and the game moved to the bottom of the third with the score 2-0 Wenatchee.

The Bells got on the board in the 4th. Shane Hanon got things started with a line drive double in the right center gap on a 0-2 count. Then Chase Strumpf doubled down the left field line to score Hanon, making the score 2-1.

Wenatchee struck for 2 more runs in the 5th. After a lineout to start the inning Sheldon Liikala laid down a perfect bunt for a single. Michael Toglia then ripped one deep to right field for a RBI triple. A failed suicide squeeze attempt turned into a steal of home for the Applesox as the ball got away from the catcher and Toglia was able to score, to make the score 4-1 going to the bottom of the 5th.

A pair of errors allowed the AppleSox to score 2 more runs in the 7th. A walk to Sheldon Liikala got things started and an error by the third baseman allowed Matt Reitano to reach giving the AppleSox a pair of baserunners. A wild pitch then allowed both runners to move up to 3rd and 2nd respectively and Alex Gonzales then lined a RBI single to left to score Liikala, the ball then rolled under the left fielder’s glove, allowing Reitano to score from second. Those runs would be all Walla Walla would need as the Bells would not be able to muster any offense in the last three innings.

A bright spot for the Bells tonight was the play of Shane Hanon, he was 3-4 with a double and a run, in addition to making a couple of sterling plays in centerfield.

The Bells also received some nice relief performances from Jeff Gelinas, David Stealy, Hunter Haworth. The trio combined for 4.1 innings of relief and did not give up an earned run.

The Bells take the field again tomorrow Sunday July 24th for their second game of the three game series against the Wenatchee AppleSox at 3:05.  Pre-game coverage starts at 2:35 on 930 AM KBAI with Tom Prizeman. To purchase tickets visit http://bellinghambells.com/home/ or call (367) 527-1035.
