Pippins Defeat Bells

07/13/2016 12:44 AM

The Bellingham Bells (17-14) fell to the Yakima Valley Pippins (20-14) 6-2 Tuesday night at Yakima County Stadium.

Yakima scored four runs in the third and fourth innings to break open a game that was 1-0 heading to the bottom half of the third.

Trailing 5-0, the Bells responded in the sixth. Elijah Skipps crushed a double off wall to put himself in scoring position. Skipps moved to third on a ball in the dirt and came into score when the throw got away from Yakima third baseman Trevor Achenbach. Bellingham trailed 5-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

Bellingham capped the scoring in the ninth. Jake Vieth walked and moved to third on a towering Skipps double off the top of the wall. Vieth came into score on a passed ball to pull the Bells within four, at 6-2. Matt DiLeo struck out to end the game.

Nick Silva (1-1) earned his second start of the summer, and tossed five innings allowing five runs but only two earned runs to earn his first loss of the campaign. Brian Way worked two innings and allowed only one run while fanning three Pippins batters. Bellingham native David Stealy pitched a scoreless eighth inning

Skipps, a future Cal Poly Mustang, reached base four times in the game for the Bells, doubling twice and walking two times.

The Bells left the bases loaded in the second and sixth innings.
