Atkinson, Stonex Sign with Bells

07/08/2011 12:53 AMThe Bells have signed two players from the Portland Dukes to strengthen their lineup. Derek Atkinson, an outfielder from Clackamas CC, and Grant Stonex, a catcher from Centralia College, are the newest members of the ballclub.

Atkinson, who arrived in Bellingham hours before Wednesday’s game, has already made an impact for the Bells. He singled and walked in his two at-bats Wednesday evening and went two for four in his first start as a Bell on Thursday. Atkinson had three of the Dukes four hits in their non-league game earlier this year against Bellingham and hit the game-winning two-run single.

This is Atkinson’s second stint with a WCL team this season, after hitting .308 as a temporary player for the Cowlitz Black Bears. Atkinson hit .308 for Clackamas this past college season and was named 2nd-team All-NWAACC.

Stonex was a two-time all-league player at Castle Rock High School and hit .256 this past season for Centralia.
