The Bellingham Bells have signed two talented outfielders from the state of Texas for the 2011 season. Michael Aquino who is a member of the perennial national college baseball power at Rice University will play for the Bells this year, and Andy Fortuna will be joining the Bellingham roster this summer from University of Texas, Pan American.
Aquino is a 5-foot-10-inch, 170-pound freshman from The Woodlands, Texas. He named a First Team 2010 All-Greater Houston team by the Houston Chronicle on the effort of a .395 batting average. Aquino also filled up the stat sheet during his senior year of high school by hitting 11 home runs, knocked in 31 RBI, while posting a .884 slugging percentage.
“We are excited to have Michael Aquino join the Bells this summer,” said Bells general manager Blake Buswell. “He has proven his talent on the field, and coming from the talented national program like Rice University, we feel fortunate to have him on our team.”
The talented University of Texas, Pan American outfielder, Fortuna, will strengthen the Bells outfield this summer. Fortuna’s hometown is Miami, Fla., where he was a four-year letter winner as a member of the Sunset High School baseball team. Highlights of Fortuna’s senior year of high school include a .470 batting average and 28 stolen bases.
“We think Andy (Fortuna) will be a great asset for the Bells this summer roaming the outfield,” Bells head coach Gary Hatch said. “He has proven numbers in batting and has speed which is a big help in getting around the diamond to score.”
The Bells open their season on June 3 at Joe Martin Field against the Kelowna Falcons.
