Markson Drives in Three in Bells 9-6 Win

07/04/2010 3:43 PMCorvallis, Ore. – The Bellingham Bells benefited from two late singles off the bat of Charlie Markson as the Bells’ left fielder drove in one run in the eighth inning and two in the ninth to give Bellingham a 9-6 win over the Corvallis Knights at Goss Stadium on Sunday, July 4.

Bellingham (15-11) and Corvallis (13-9) battled back and forth, exchanging leads five times throughout the contest before Markson put the Bells on top with a run-scoring single with two outs in the eighth.

The Bells had an early lead with one run in the first inning and two more runs in the third inning before starting pitcher Chase Brewer allowed four runs in the bottom half of the third. Bellingham regained the lead in the fifth inning as Frank Desico reached first on a fielder’s choice that allowed Junnior Dishmey-Perez to tie the game; Charlie Markson put the Bells back on top after an error on Corvallis’ Griffin Boyd.

Mitch Ludtke relieved Brewer in the third inning and pitched 4 1/3 innings. Ludtke held the Knights scoreless and was effective on the mound before giving up a one-out single and walking two batters in the seventh—both runs scored in the frame were credited to Ludtke after he was replaced on the hill by Danny Hennigs.

With the score tied after seven innings, Bellingham regained the lead on Markson’s single and brought in closer Ben Ruff to shut down Corvallis. The Bells added insurance runs in the ninth on another Markson single before Ben Ruff struck out two of the game’s last three batters to pick up his fifth save of the season.

Hennigs was credited with the win; his first of the season.

The Bells and Knights square off in the rubber match of the three game series on Monday, July 5 beginning at 6:35 p.m. at Goss Stadium. Currently both teams are tied for second place in the West Coast League’s West Division, 3 1/2 games behind the Bend Elks.
