Sweets Make First Meeting Sour for Bells

06/28/2010 8:38 PMThe Bellingham Bells lost their second consecutive game Monday, June 28 at Joe Martin Field in their first game ever against one of the newest West Coast League teams, the Walla Walla Sweets.

Bellingham climbed out to the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first, but Walla Walla bounced back with three runs in the second to take a lead the Sweets would not relinquish. Walla Walla added to its lead with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings while the Bells tried to mound a comeback in the seventh but managed only one additional run in the losing effort.

Bells starter Tyrell Poggemeyer struggled early on the mound and never found his groove, allowing five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

John Volk came in to relieve Poggemeyer in his first appearance at Joe Martin Field. He threw 3 2/3 hitless innings and retired the first nine batters he faced.

The Bells and Sweets continue their series Tuesday, June 29 on $2 Tuesday at Joe Martin Field. Tuesday is also Lummi Night at Joe Martin Field presented by Silver Reef Casino. First pitch for Tuesday’s game is slated for 6:35 p.m.
