Bells Outlast Raptor Comeback

07/31/2019 9:58 AM

The Bellingham Bells defeated the Ridgefield Raptors, 10-9, in the first of a three-game series Tuesday night at Ridgefield Outdoor Recreation Complex.

The teams combined for 19 runs on 30 hits, with most the offense coming in the first two innings of play. The Raptors slowly rallied with nine unanswered runs from the second inning on, but the Bells were able to close things out for their 21st win of the summer.
The scoring started in the top of the first inning when the Guthrie Morrison scored Collin Burns with a sacrifice-fly to put the Bells ahead 1-0. Cole Hinkelman then cranked a long fly ball to center that was misplayed, allowing two more runs to come in, making it 3-0.
The Bells then plated seven runs on eight hits in the second inning to take a commanding 10-0 lead. Ethan Smith led off the inning with his first homerun as a Bell, a solo shot over the wall in left-center. Burns then tripled and scored on a Jack Machtolf single before Troy Viola doubled him in to go up 5-0. Derek Marshall then cranked a three-run shot over the batter’s eye in center, and Jake Gentry followed with an RBI double to make it 10-0.
The Raptors began their lengthy comeback in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs to cut the Bells’ lead in half.
They scored three more runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh, but Jimmy Chatfield shut the door in the bottom of the ninth for his second save of the summer.
The Bells will look to secure the series win with a victory Wednesday evening at Ridgefield Outdoor Recreation Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
