Bells Win First Road Game

06/07/2019 10:27 AM

The Bellingham Bells (3-1) defeated the Port Angeles Lefties (2-2), 11-10, tonight at Civic Field behind 11 hits and a shutdown relief performance from right-hander Will Armbruester.

Despite a first pitch temperature of 53 degrees, the run scoring started early and often, and never really stopped, on the way to the Bells’ third win of the season.

The bottom of the Bells’ order started the damage in the second inning when Danny Martin and Sam Swenson put themselves on with two-out singles. Chase Anderson then ripped a single of his own to plate Martin for a 1-0 lead.

The Lefties answered in the home half of the second with a two-run homerun from Evan Horn off Bells starter Justin Armbruester (1-0) to take a 2-1 lead.

The Bells then responded in the third by loading the bases for Collin Burns, who plated a pair of runs with a double. Martin then scored another Bells run with a sac-fly to take a 4-2 lead.

Port Angeles pulled within one in the third behind a RBI double from Damiano Palmegani before Jordan Vujovich grabbed the run back with a RBI double in the fourth to put the Bells up 5-3. The next batter, Burns, launched a three-run homerun over the centerfield wall to give Bellingham an 8-3 advantage.

The Lefties clapped back with a solo blast from Alex Garcia in the fifth to make it 8-4.

They scored three more runs in the home half of the seventh behind a Ronnie Rust RBI single, a Zander Marco RBI groundout and a bases-loaded walk to make it a one-run game at 8-7.

Timely offense in the top of the eighth allowed the Bells to extend their lead, though. Sam Swenson led things off getting hit by a pitch before Chase Anderson laid down a bunt single to put men on second and third. Dylan Morgan then sac-bunted the pair to second and third for Mason Marenco, who drove pinch-runner Nic Sokol in with a groundball to second.

The throw home on the Marenco grounder got away allowing Anderson to score, as well. Guthrie Morrison followed with a sac-fly to center to push the Bells lead to 11-7.

Port Angeles made things interesting with three more runs in the bottom of the inning on a Palmegani three-run shot before Danny Garcia finished the frame.

After a scoreless top of the ninth, Will Armbruester came in to close things down and proceeded to strike out the side on the way to his first save of the season, and an 11-10 Bells win.

The Bells and Lefties will face off for game two the series tomorrow at Civic Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m
