Renkert makes long journey to golf

10/14/2009 9:09 PM - Three months after taking up long-drive golf, former Bellingham Bells pitcher Dane Renkert has qualified for a shot at a world championship and a $250,000 prize.

The 28-year-old former Sehome baseball standout has quickly learned how to stroke the ball consistently more than 400 yards with the special drivers used by competitors in the annual Re/Max World Long Drive Championship in Mesquite, Nev.

He's one of 126 athletes who will tee it up Oct. 27-29 in three pools of 42. Only eight men will emerge from each pool for the final day of competition Oct. 30.
