A late offensive surge would lead the Bellingham Bells to a 5-4 victory over the Wenatchee AppleSox on Thursday night at Joe Martin Field.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the 6th inning, the Bells would use doubles by both RJ Ybarra and Michael Annunziata to tally three runs and take a 4-3 lead. Both hits would go all the way to the wall, reinforcing the power we have already seen from Annunziata and are sure to see plenty of from Ybarra, the Arizona State University catcher who was playing in just his second game since joining the Bells.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, Bellingham would take advantage of two Wenatchee errors to tally on another run. AppleSox catcher Joey Harris attempted to catch Alex Calbick stealing second, allowing Johnny Sewald to score from third on an errant throw home.
That would be all the offense the Bells would need on the night, giving them a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish.
Nate Cole (1-0) was the beneficiary of the Bells late inning surge as he became the pitcher of record when he took the mound in the 6th inning. Cole earned his first win of the season after tossing four innings while allowing one run on two AppleSox hits.
Bells starter Luke Morrill earned a no decision despite his stellar five innings of work. Mitch Yada (1-1) took the loss for Wenatchee.
The two squads will wrap up their three game series Friday night at Joe Martin Field. Game time is 7:05. There will be a Bells flag giveaway to the first 750 fans through the gates. All the action can be heard on AM 930 KBAI and 930KBAI.com with Mike Weisman on the call.
