The Bellingham Bells continue to swing the bats well, finishing off a three game sweep of the Kitsap BlueJackets, winning 8-2 Friday night. Jarel Lewis continues to hit, going 4-5 with two RBI and Nate Causey had a big night as well, going 3-5 on the night with three RBI.
The Bells scored first as they have done so many times this season, with another two out rally. Kitsap starter Allen Hewey retired the first two batters of the inning but then hot hitting Jarel Lewis doubled down the left field line. Lewis didn’t wait long to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Designated hitter Nate Causey singled Lewis home to give the Bells an early 1-0 lead. The BlueJackets would quickly get that run back in the top of the second on an RBI double from Francisco Tellez to tie the game at one.
After two innings both starting pitchers settled down and put zeros on the board for the next three innings. The play of the game came in the top of the sixth inning with the game still tied 1-1. Kitsap had the go ahead run at third with two outs and Tellez belted a ball to deep center off of new Bells’ pitcher Keith Zuniga. Bells’ centerfielder Derek Atkinson had an excellent jump on the ball and made a spectacular diving catch at the warning track to keep the game tied.
Immediately following Atkinson’s great catch, the Bells offense finally broke through against BlueJackets starter Allen Hewey in the bottom of the sixth. Jarel Lewis led off the inning with a single and ended up at second on a throwing error. That brought up Nate Causey who smashed a line drive to the wall in left field and legged out a triple which scored Lewis and gave the Bells a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Jake Peevyhouse brought home Causey on an RBI double to stretch the lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Bells quickly loaded the bases on singles from Michael Leach and Johnny Farrington and a hit by pitch by Kai Hatch. That brought up the Bells hottest hitter, Jarel Lewis, with a chance to do some damage with no outs and he did not disappoint. Lewis drove a ball into centerfield, which brought home Leach and Farrington and gave the Bells a 5-1 lead. Later in the inning, Derek Atkinson added another run on an RBI triple which gave the Bells a commanding 6-1 lead after seven.
The Bells would add two more runs for good measure in the bottom of the eighth on RBI singles from Farrington and Causey which gave the Bells an 8-1 lead. That was Nate Causey’s third RBI on the night, giving him 13 on the year which is tied for the league lead. In the top of the ninth inning, the BlueJackets Rhys Hoskins drilled a line drive over the left field fence for a monster home run off of Keith Zuniga. That would cut the Bells lead to 8-2 and that would be all that Kitsap could come up with. The Bells sweep the Kitsap BlueJackets and win their fourth consecutive game to improve their record to 10-3.
The Bells will have one more home game Saturday night against West Coast Portland, before heading out on a long 13 day road trip. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
