The Bellingham Bells (6-6) plated two runs in the second inning and never looked back. Ben Ruff broke up the scoreless game with a double to drive in Ben Grubb. One batter later Brady Locker scored on a sacrifice fly by Wynton Bernard.
Wenatchee (7-4) pulled within one run in the bottom half of the second, but the Bells responded with a run in the third on an RBI double by Grubb to retake the two-run lead. The Bells continued to add to their lead with one run in the sixth, two runs in the seventh, and three runs in the eighth. Grubb paced the way for Bellingham offensively with three hits, two runs, and two runs batted in.
Fassold (1-0, 1.88 ERA) was Bellingham’s rock on the mound. In seven complete innings, Fassold allowed just four hits and two runs while striking out 12 batters. He now has 23 strikeouts on the season in 14 1/3 innings pitched to lead the West Coast League.
Bellingham and Wenatchee return to Paul Thomas Sr. Field Sunday, June 20, in the rubber match of the three game series. The Bells are planning to send James Wise to the mound in the series finale.
