Wenatchee (7-3) scored the game’s first run in the third inning after loading the bases on an error by Bells third baseman Ben Ruff. The Applesox added to their lead with a solo home run in the sixth inning.
The Bells (5-6) were held scoreless through the first eight frames before getting to Wenatchee reliever Stuart Fewel in the ninth. Bellingham scored twice and had four of their nine hits in the final inning to pull even with the home team before the Applesox brought in Colby Crawford to get out of the inning.
In the home half of the ninth, Wenatchee used three singles and a sacrifice bunt to plate the game-winning run.
Bells starter Cordell Greene was pitching for contact and although he gave up 10 of Wenatchee’s 13 hits, he allowed just two runs—one earned—in 6 2/3 innings on the mound. He kept the ball in the zone, striking out four and walking one.
Frank Desico and Chris Sturdivant led the Bells offensively with two hits each. Sturdivant also batted in a run for the Bells.
The same two teams return to Paul Thomas Sr. Field in Wenatchee, Wash., Saturday, June 19, for game two of the three-game series. First pitch for Saturday’s contest is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and Bells fans can catch all the action live on AM 930 KBAI and online at www.930KBAI.com and www.BellinghamBells.com.
